Children develop intellectual and practical skills that allow them to explore the world of science through observation, exploration and investigation.

There are three main areas of study:

  • Life processes: exploring living things (humans, animals and plants)
  • Materials and their properties: natural and man-made materials, investigating change in materials in different conditions, and identifying similarities and differences in the properties of materials
  • Physical processes: light and sound, forces and energy, including aspects of safety

National Curriculum Programme of Study
