Children begin by understanding the past and present and how it relates to them. They find out about significant men, women, children and events from the recent and more distant past, both from Britain and the wider world. They learn how the past is different from the present. This experience widens as their understanding increases.

Children learn through:

• stories from different times and cultures
• looking at and using different sources such as photographs, artefacts, books, video/film, and written materials from the past
• identifying differences between ways of life at different times
